Fantastic Rediscovered: Rare Photographs from the Estate of Kati Horna.
Sotheby’s New York (March 28 - April 27) and Los Angeles (September 12 - October 6), 2017.
Scheduled to coincide with the AIPAD Photography Show in New York and the Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative in Los Angeles, Fantastic Rediscovered - which I curated for Sotheby’s S|2 Contemporary Art Gallery - offered audiences in both cities a comprehensive survey of the work of the Hungarian-born Mexican photographer Kati Horna (1912-2000). Fantastic Rediscovered followed the critically-acclaimed exhibition Told and Untold: The Photostories of Kati Horna in the Illustrated Press, which I co-curated at Americas Society during the fall of 2016. Whereas Told and Untold had emphasized Horna’s career-long proximity with the illustrated press, Fantastic Rediscovered underscored the photographer’s sensibility towards the fantastic and mysterious in everyday life.
